How was launched your organization’s cooperation with the third country nationals?

Cooperation was launched during planning and implementing the project by the European Fund for Integration for Third-Country Nationals „Introduce yourself, this is our Latvia and we are proud of its language and culture!” when we identified and addressed the third country nationals who would like to participate in project activities and introduce with their needs and opportunities in Latvia.

What major challenges you see will face the people from the third countries at both levels – social and state?

At first, insufficient knowledge of Latvian language. Secondly, lack of friends/acquaintances. And, thirdly, difficulties to find a job.

What solutions could be applied to address these challenges?

We see the following solutions:

  • Language training
  • Integration activities – excursions, workshops, camps
  • Events for interfamilial meetings
  • Mentoring programs
  • Opportunities of working practice

Please, tell if have you experience in involving third country nationals in volunteering work in your organization?

Yes, in the framework of project „Introduce yourself, this is our Latvia and we are proud of its language and culture!” we provided to 10 third country nationals the working practice in the branches of the Association “Latvian Red Cross”. The working experiences they gained at humanitarian aid posts, accounting, health rooms and also organizing events for children.

Do you think the problems/challenges are different for people living (studying etc.) in Latvia if compare to other EU member states? If yes, please name the ones?

Mainly it is insufficient state support and irregular integration activities.

What is you observation or experience about the attitude of the Latvian society towards third country nationals?

Our experience shows that third country nationals are responsive; they have a desire to introduce and find out more. However, considering that they often lack language skills they frequently feel unconvincing and feel insecure about themselves.

Have the third country national you`ve been cooperating with faced different treatment, probably discriminating attitude on behalf of the society?

No, we have not experienced these kinds of cases.

What do you think we can learn or have learnt from the third country nationals who are living in Latvia?

We can learn from them a determination and initiative to be ready to change things around, the living place and itself.

What are three points you would advise to the third country national who plans to come to Latvia shortly or has just arrived in Latvia?

First and foremost – start to train Latvian language before arriving, be brave, look for and find the own place in Latvia!

What do you think is the role of NGO in integration of third country nationals in Latvia?

NGO has a substantial role in language training and organizing integration events as well as in providing social services.
